The prompt “Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance” is very annoying. Join me for tips on how to handle it.

Full error message is “Windows has detected your computer's performance is slow. This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme. To improve performance, try change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic. Any change you make will be in effect until the next time you log on to Windows.”

Color Scheme Change

No matter, which option you select this will continue to popup regularly. Windows 7 isn't smart enough to manage your GPU memory properly. You may not be out of GPU memory but the Desktop Window Manager has detected you're running low on a specific feature. There are 6 ways to fix it.

Disable the Message

  • Start Menu
  • Start typing Action Center in the Search box and then select it when it pops up
  • Select Change Action Center settings
  • Untick the Windows Troubleshooting check box
  • Click the OK button

Restart Desktop Window Manager

  • Start Menu
  • Type cmd
  • Type net stop uxsms and hit enter
  • Type net start uxsms and hit enter

Other Choices

  • Simply get more GPU memory
  • Keep your settings as is and switch to Basic desktop mode before launching applications
  • Disable Desktop Composition for your application
    • Right click on the shortcut used to launch the application in question
    • Click Properties
    • Under Compatibility tab, tick Disable desktop composition
    • As you may have guessed, this will disable the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service when the application in question is launched.
  • Disable Desktop Composition globally (not usually recommended)
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Under System, Click Adjust the appearance and performance…
    • Under Visual Effects, untick Enable desktop composition
    • Click Apply
    • Click OK
